Madelyn’s 1st Birthday
Hey there! Happy Friday! I have a little something sweet to share today! Our daughter, Madelyn, turned 1 on September 13th and we celebrated with family and friends at a birthday party last weekend. I can’t believe she’s such a big girl already! We are so blessed to have such a sweet and spunky girl and it’s hard to put into words the joy she brings to our lives!
My mom and I had so much fun planning Madi’s party and making everything from invitations to favors to food and even some “furniture”! So I thought I’d share a little bit about her party today. It all started with the theme which was Polka Dot Party. After deciding on the theme I scheduled a cake smash photo session with Kami (Moretti Photography) so that I could use the photo for her invitation. My mom and I made the rainbow layered cake and the polka dot banner in the background.
Jon and I got such a kick out seeing her dive into the cake! I love her curled toes and the look of excitement on her face. She had fun digging into the cake but actually wasn’t that excited about eating it. After getting these shots from Kami I put together the invitations using Doodlebug Candy Dots paper. All of the white dots are sugared (i.e. glittered) and the right side underneath her picture lifts up to reveal all the party details (when, where, etc.). I just love how they turned out!
After the invitations were done we started planning the food and decor. The menu included cupcakes (of course!), Rice Krispie balls dipped in colored candy coating, fruit kabobs, and sandwiches. For the sandwiches we ordered colored bread from a local bakery and cut them into circles using a Pampered Chef sandwich cutter/crimper. The sandwiches were nutella & marshmallow creme, peanut butter & jelly, and chicken salad.
For the decor, I hung lanterns and tissue poms in all different colors along with polka dot curtains and a polka dot table skirt. I made a cute decorative piece by sticking Dum Dum suckers into a styrofoam ball and setting it on top of a hot pink candle holder. Note to self: get a smaller styrofoam ball next time. I think it took 14 packages of Dum Dums to decorate the whole ball! We also re-finished an old Fisher Price plastic picnic table for the occasion.
After disassembling and cleaning it, I spray painted it with Rustoleum for plastic (which comes in super cute colors!). My mom found this vinyl/oilcloth fabric at our local fabric store and she recovered the top and the benches using a staple gun. I simply LOVE how it turned out and Madi sits at the table in her playroom and puts together puzzles. OK… actually she doesn’t know how to put the puzzle together yet but she’s really good at taking it apart piece by piece and whipping the pieces in all directions!
And last, but not least, I made her party favors using gumballs and test tubes along with a little tag that I made using the Kid at Heart stamp set and Take Note 3 die. The sentiment, “If friends were gumballs I’d chews you!” was perfect!
