Hello, crafty friends! Blog Design Team member, Caryn Davies plays with wood today in this fun card using contrasting colors of wood veneer sheets!
Caryn’s Note: Hi there – Caryn here with a card that highlights JUST how amazing the Taylored Expressions steel dies are for cutting a variety of different materials perfectly.
Caryn’s Notes: I picked up some thin wood veneer a few months ago and it’s been sitting in my cupboard waiting for the right moment to be put to good use. As I had two contrasting shades I thought the Ray of Sunshine cutting plate would be the perfect die to use for this technique.
Caryn’s Notes: I ran the die through the die-cutting machine once for each shade of veneer and then chose the darker shade “frame” to use on this card. I adhered the outline die-cut to a piece of white card stock exactly the same size and then placed the inner pieces back in to the frame in alternating colors. I used a strong adhesive for this so that the pieces were held down in place really well.
Caryn’s Notes: Next I took some doubled sided foam adhesive sheets and die-cut the tulips and leaves from Tiptoe Through The Tulips. I ran the dies through again this time cutting from both shades of wood veneer.
Caryn’s Notes: Carefully remove the die from the adhesive sheets so that the die-cut stays in place within the sheet for the time being. I find doing it this way saves a LOT of fiddling later on. Using a sharp piercing tool, gently remove the adhesive protective layer JUST from the die-cut area, still keeping it in place within the foam sheet. Once the “sticky” is exposed, layer the wood veneer die-cuts over the top and press into place. Now the veneer is adhered exactly in place over the foam adhesive and the whole assembly can be separated from the foam sheet. The resulting dimensional tulips are then placed onto the panel.
If you don’t have wood veneer sheets, you can substitute wood patterned paper to achieve the same look.
Caryn will be back again soon with another fab creation, so be sure to tune in to the TE Blog often!
