Blog Design Team: Quilted Beauty
Happy Thursday, crafty friends! Today, Blog Team Designer Julia Stainton (and resident stitching queen) has created a jaw-dropping card that will have you pulling out your dusty sewing machine in the pursuit of beauty.
And now, let’s hear from Julia about her project…
It’s no secret that I love stitching on cards. It adds a wonderful
textured look that’s perfect for all kinds of styles. Often I love
stitching squares but recently I’ve been addicted to using hexagons in
my designs. I love this unique shape and the Hexagon Stacklets are the perfect way to incorporate them in your
designs. Hexagons also remind me of some of my grandmother’s beautiful
quilts and by pairing up stitching with this hexagon die set, it’s super
easy to get a lovely quilt look.
To create this design, I first
started out by using the largest and the middle sized dies to die cut
layers of patterned paper. You can mix and match scraps you have on hand
but the easy way to get a perfectly coordinated look is to mix and
layer papers from the same paper collection. Adhere the hexagon die cuts
onto a layer of white cardstock. Be careful with how you line them up
as spacing properly will make your stitching lines better in the final
design.
To add in the stitching, I followed the straight white
border areas as stitching guidelines and then stitched straight across
the layers . You’ll find you’ll cross the hexagons, each one three times
before you are done. Carefully trim away any excess threads and then
stitch your stitched panel to the card base.
I added in some
pretty flowers and vintage buttons that I had on hand to embellish the
bottom of the project. I love tucking in small sentiments into these
embellishment clusters to both add in a sentiment and further embellish
the cluster. The word ‘hello’ from the Many Minis – Occasions stamp set
accents a little strip of kraft cardstock. I love this stamp set as it
has an amazing TWENTY little sentiments that are perfect to cover every
occasion you might need. I admit I often leave the sentiment to last
when designing and the tiny size means that they easily fit into the
design, even once the card is designed.
Creating with simple die
cuts doesn’t have to be boring. In fact some of the simplest dies are
the best ones as there are so many different ways to use them. Just use
your imagination!
Thanks so much, Julia, for sharing this stunning card and for all the tips on how to create our own! Be sure to check out Julia’s blog, Belle Papier to see more of her lovely projects. Have a joyful day!
